About Us
The Boston Teacup is a weblog for those who want to enjoy tea to it's fullest in the Boston area. It was founded in May 2007 by two friends with a common interest in relaxed dining, conversation, tea and cakes. The authors, Hana T and Tom E, met on the online review site Yelp.com and soon embarked on a crusade to find the best afternoon tea experience in Boston.
The Boston Teacup is intended to help both locals and visitors to Boston find out more about the historical link between the city and tea, and where to go to get the best of this wonderful drink. We believe that Boston should be The Tea Capital of America - it has the history, many places to get elegant afternoon teas and a plethora of traditional and bubble tea shops and suppliers.Tom E - 30
I moved from England to Boston in 2006 and just like most ex-pats, I immediately developed an unhealthy obsession with tea and the British rituals surrounding it. A form of home-sickness? Maybe. Colonial patriotism? Most definitely!
Fortunately Boston has not disappointed, and with a little exploration and help from Hana I've managed to find the best places to enjoy tea as it should be and tea as it can also be. As a typical Englishman my regular tea is simply a mug of English Breakfast with a dash of milk and perhaps a snack.

My fondest memory of tea is when at every Vietnamese New Year, there would be lots of cakes and cookies and I would eat them while sipping on a cup of hot jasmine tea. As a kid, I could not wait until all the ceremonial offerings were done so I could eat all the treats and have a sugar high. It's silly to admit it, but I still do it now, just less extreme.
The allure of tea and sweets led to the search for the best places to have afternoon tea in Boston. Before this, my knowledge of tea was quite limited, and I'd always stick to the same familiarity of tea. Since the search began, accompanied by my friend Tom, I've tried many more different and interesting variety of teas, as well as learning about them too.

Hi Tom and Hana,
I wondered if you had any suggestions for a place to take children.
A group of my girlfriends and I want to have a day with our 4 or 5 year old little girls.
There will be 12 of us.
The girls are familiar with afternoon tea because they along with their teachers host an event each spring and the students make their own food and prepare the tea. Yes, even the 4 year olds.
Wondered what you could suggest.
TJ - that is great that you'll be taking tea with a big group including children. You'll find that many of the places listed also offer a tea geared more towards children and would jump at the chance of hosting your posse.
From memory both Upstairs On The Square and Swans Cafe in the Park Plaza Hotel do a children's tea, although the latter is a bit of a disappointment (we're still writing our review for that). I'd try Upstairs first and see what they say. If they can't accommodate a group your size then try the larger tearooms - InTrigue at the Harbor Hotel (consistently good), Novel Cafe at the Public Library (weekdays only), and The Lounge at The Taj Hotel (the best of the best, but maybe too stuffy for kids).
Let us know how you get on.
Hi I am writing because I am not only a tea aficionado and this site has enabled me to plan tea time for a bachelorette party but also because I would like to pursue a career with Yelp. I am currently interested in becoming a community manager with Yelp and I was wondering if you had any suggestions. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
I stumbled on this site searching for the Boston Public Library's high tea hours... I've always loved afternoon tea, ran a daily tea service in our library during college, and would love it if the whole world paused for tea every day! I'm so happy to read your reviews... another tea service I like (but haven't been to recently) is the one at the MFA-- informal, inexpensive, some home-baked/made goodies by volunteers on the 2nd flour lounge area of the museum. It would be great if other museums (Isabella Stewart Gardner, ICA, etc.) also had afternoon tea!

Hi T & H
This is a great subject and a great blog! I'm an expat Brit too, and always looking for an authentic cuppa!
I wanted to give you a head's up on the Afternoon Tea posting you have at the BPL. The Catered Affair has partnered with the BPL to coordinate the BPL's meetings, special events and restaurants and we now have a new name, The Courtyard Restaurant, and phone number (617 859 2251). As you can guess, we're trying to make our Afternoon Tea THE most authentic in Boston ( I'd like to think my tea-drinking expertise counts a little). Afternoon Tea at the BPL is now the best in the city of Boston. We also offer private tea parties for "philanthropists and princesses"! We look forward to seeing you soon. Best, Joanna
